Something’s got to give..

Just stealing the title from the movie. But it hold a  whole different meaning here. Tomorrow there will a protest on the streets of Genova by the workers of the giant companies who have since either closed down or laid of thousands of workers. My SIL is one of them. Since the 2008 crisis hit Europe, we have been seeing wave after wave of people being laid off. Suicide rates have gone through the roof, so to speak. There was an average of 2 suicides PER DAY last year and more than 11,000 Italians companies closed their doors last year alone. In the Guardian’s new yesterday they estimated that the unemployment rate in Italy is now at 24% which is really high.

Everyday, there is news of corruption and tax evasion plastered all over our newspapers, TV and radio channels. I do find a lot of it to be really disgusting. I have nothing against businessmen who have worked hard for their money, provided employment for many to enjoy their hard earned money but I have something against politicians who earn €30k a month (what the average person earns in a year!), with full benefits (telephone, car and misc. expenses paid for by the government) and are tax exempted. Also, once their tenure ends, their are entitled their “pensions” for serving the country, for LIFE! Even if you served only for a month in the parliament, you are entitled to that pension too. Some only work in total a month in a year. Now, somebody tell me how to get into politics! Even I want that!! Anybody?? wait…I don’t know anyone. It is a cronies only politics here and I thought we, from “developing” countries had it bad.

Out VAT or IVA in Italy is going up to 23% end of this year. Gas and Utility is up by about 3.5-4.7% each. They have lowered then pensions of the existing pensioners (mind you, not those of the politicians, just the laymen) and our petrol prices hover around €1.80 -€2 per litre. They upped personal taxes and company taxes and they wonder why people don’t want to pay taxes. They brought back home owner’s tax which also, if I am not mistaken also taxes €200 per head per household. I might be wrong on that. As a citizen (not me of course) you pay almost 50% to the government and then you get taxed more on whatever that remains through everything else that you use, consume and breathe in…what remains? No wonder the citizens are taking to the streets! There is even, restaurants who hang on their doors “politicians are not allowed”.

I am sure there are those who really work for the good of the people but they are the minorities. But why should they earn so much and be tax exempted? While they raise taxing for everyone else. Italy has one of the highest tax burdens in the world, ranked about 5th from the world’s top ten but the lowest paycheck in the whole of EU. It is a vicious cycle. We own our own business, so I know it is really hard to maintain the business with so many different taxes you have to pay for the business, for the people you hire and the labour laws actually does not encourage us to hire anyone full time at all. We had employees who stole from us but we could not just kick them out. We still had to “compensate” them €1k for every year they had been with us, and another amount of settlement we agree in front of a judge and pursue the theft as a civil suit after the compensation. I, like any rational person, would think that AFTER you have stolen from the company, you have forfeited your rights to ANY compensation due to you because you have violated the trust between the company and you. Am I not right?

In the end we paid €13k for this person to leave the company and not to pursue anything further from that point on from us. This person worked for us for 7 years, who knows what they have taken from us? We found only because we saw a strange charge on the company credit card statement over the December holidays. This person bought holiday flight tickets for 2 people for the December holidays! So it makes me think that this person could have been taking “holidays” on the company each time they went on leave. What am I to think?? Also, for this to escape our prying eyes, the accountant must have been on it too! Doctored the documents before reaching us. Shit!

Because of that law too, it is so difficult to fire someone after you have hired them because it is a very expensive exercise, in the end, companies don’t hire. Especially full time. Because if we do, it might come back to bite us! So in the end we have endless part time workers and they don’t get any benefits because they are part timers. Because companies are afraid of hiring, most Italian companies remain small and uncompetitive in the market place. Also, I was complaining all the time about their opening hours, especially when they are closed for lunch when that is the BEST time to open. Lunch times are like 3 hours. Who eats lunch for 3 hours? Most people don’t. So, after eating what do they do? wander around and maybe shop! I found out that it is not because they DON’T  want to open but they have to abide by state AND national labour laws that allow them to open for a certain amount of hours only AND  at certain pre-determined times. A license that you have to apply and pay for AND differs from region to region. How about that! I am sure you didn’t know about that before!

My rantings will be endless. I don’t want to sound bitter and angry. I am actually writing this to say that I might just join my SIL on the streets tomorrow and fully support the white widow, (as they are known, the wives of the men who died at work but recently pinned to wives of men, business owners and workers alike, who killed themselves because the crisis has taken a toll on them) on Friday on the streets of Bologna ending at the tax office where the husband of the organiser set himself on fire last month.

I wasn’t there in my country to support Bersih (in another post) but I can support something here for the people of Italy and my Italian family.

Mousey is missing Milo…

My darling Milo

It is Mayday today and I am home alone and relishing every moment of it. M is in Torino (Turin) on a off road circuit testing out his other off road vespa which he is planning to use for the Africa Race next year. So I am being the couch potato with my laptop on my lap (hahahahaa…where else do laptops go? they are called LAPtops….) and the TV, channel surfing from time to time. A few channels are showing different episodes of Cesar Millan, the programme I absolutely LOVE! To get pointers on my dealings with Milo and of the adorable dogs that he handles.

Today, one of the programmes had 2 Frenchies. I was eager to see what their problem was and to just watch them. They were SO CUTE!!! Made me miss my darling Milo. The owner, a Hollywood actor, director and writer has 2 adorable Frenchies who to him he couldn’t control. They took him for walks instead of he taking them for walks. They lunged at anything that passed them and bolt right out the door when there is anyone at the door. The comment he made that made me laugh out loud was that one of his dogs had the really sad doeful eyes that always makes him feel guilty whereas the other one has the corner eyeball look all the time as if asking him “what do you want” almost smirking. Describing Milo exactly! He does the doeful eye when he is wondering where we are going and when we are leaving without him. He has the corner eyeball look when I try to get photos of him or when he is sulking and having his back to me. 😀

Milo now lives with my in-laws. M and I make the excuse of us being horrible owners and wanting to live our couple life free of dog duty which is partly true but mostly we want to leave my in-laws, especially my MIL with company. Our constant travelling is very disruptive to the routine of Milo. He has a routine already well established with my in-laws. So, we feel that it is better to leave him with my in-laws since whenever we are in town, we are over there at least 3 times a week. Another reason, is that my in-laws are older and they can’t hear the doorbell and there has been people preying on the fact that there are old people only at home, the have tried to steal stuff. Stray cats wander in and steal food. With Milo, all the unwanted guests are kept at bay and whenever there is someone at the door, he alerts my in-laws.

My FIL has a cute routine with Milo. Every morning when he has his biscuits and coffee, Milo is perched on the chair, which they allow him to be on, my FIL feeds him the other half of the coffee dunked biscuits. Next, my MIL will be doing her morning chats with Milo while he remains perched on the chair listening to her conversation. They are too cute to watch!!! 🙂 🙂

Though Milo stays with them, he is still my darling! Know how they say that dogs recognise only 1 owner? This is true. He respects and is close to the whole family but he recognises me as his owner. When I walk into the room, no one else matters. Such a boost for my ego! LOL!!! I did train him well! Cesar says you have to show that you are the pack leader and I am. He begs, paws and jump on the others but not me. Not the behaviour I encourage so he doesn’t do it to me. He never begs me for food at the table because I NEVER acknowledge his begging and when I stand up he backs off away from the table regardless of who he is begging from. But I am always admonished by my in-laws for being too harsh on Milo. I am NOT!! I just believe that dogs should not be allowed to disturb anyone at the dinner table and not be fed any of our food which is too salty or too many spices, not good for any dogs’ digestive tract. What’s more, Milo has an allergy.

But we trained him well. He is a damn good traveller. He has been to so many places and absolutely loves being on a bike with wind in his face. His disgestive tract activities leaves much to be desired and his snoring…goodness me! keeps everyone awake if you  are in the same room. But he is an absolute joy with his comical antics and his ability to just settle in anywhere!

I got to go soon. Going for a run and right after that, going to have dinner at my in-laws and see Milo!!!

Leaving you with a curious Milo…. 🙂

Mousey roller-blading??

All ready for roller-blading

Spring is in the air and it has been ages since I last roller-bladed. I am not good at it but I can go straight, swerve to avoid people, stop and do a turn-a-bout, albeit a little big of a circle to achieve it instead of the graceful ala ice skaters’ jump and twist. M is amazing at it. He went to the USA in his early 20s with a bunch of friends and discovered roller blades. Something that was new at that time, we are talking about more than 20 years ago. The irony of the situation is such that, roller blades could not be found in Italy yet but it was made by an Italian company. So, the business man in him decided to contact the manufacturer upon his return and set up a roller blade rental kiosk here in Genova way ahead of everyone else and he gave lessons. This little business actually sustained our present main business while in its infancy.

In that whole time, he lived, breathed and ate roller blade. He is so good at it that he was asked to do an ad in a volcanic crater. Sounds far fetched? I thought so too at that time. He had photos as proof!! So I had to zip it! 😛 Actually many know him as the one who roller blades around town and also one of the few crazy ones to ski in the historic centre 20 years ago. This stunt was recently replicated when we had an unusual snowfall earlier this year or as it end of last year. There is a youtube video floating around on this.

Anyway, today while running outside, he must have seen a little boy trying out his new roller blades and he excitedly came back into the office (yes, we are sad that way..in the office on a Sunday. We are perpetually here!) and said “let’s go roller blading!!”. We have been talking about it for some time. I do prefer roller-blading  to running. It seems less tiring. It is. I like the wind in my face and when I need to rest, I just glide. So much easier! But, one thing for sure, my back and leg muscles were aching! It works those back and thigh muscles I never knew I had! Which is a good thing! So many exclamation marks….hahahahaaha! I am excited!

I am writing this while cooling down. Stretching the back muscles while typing this. How? you say? My keyboard is wireless…so easy. Bend over, and leave the keyboard on the floor. Or sit on the chair, with wheels of course, and push it back and forth. Well the lazy man’s stretching. Guilty as charged!

I had a good workout! Though it was a wet and lazy Sunday earlier on, I am now geared up for the rest of the week! Bought some new knee guards as my knees are aching like a 70 yr old and I am all ready! After the accident, my knees have never been the same. It can give way while walking, or climbing up or down stairs. Come to think of it, roller blading would be THE best exercise for my knees.

Exercise! Exercise!!! Ah…my sis would be proud!

I like spring!!! *random thought*

Mousey’s brush with H1N1…

Hello everyone!

Hopefully you guys didn’t feel lonely the last 2 weeks when I was having my internet withdrawal moments. I lost 2 weeks just like that! Not a big deal in the grand scheme of things but I was hoping that I would be able to keep to 10 posts a month. Since I started with this new paradigm shift in my mindset, I have been actively trying to keep my motivation sky high. But I am back now to set the record straight!

Last 2 weeks, I was back in Malaysia where we had an exhibition on and I took the opportunity to go home since it was in my own country. We got back to Malaysia on the 13th of April which was a Friday (come to think of it, it was Friday the 13th!! :P). Got in early and brought Eddy straight for some local food since he couldn’t check in yet and I wanted my laksa. But where we went we were still too early for laksa. Then I went home, my sis’ place, and then my sis and my BIL S sent Eddy to the hotel. That was when the adventure began. Not for me but for my sis and S.

S was having fever on and off for the past week after their disastrous Air Asia adventure weekend in Penang. They have gone to the doctors for 3 times already and the last diagnose was that he possibly had dengue fever. Told to go home and rest and if it got worse, he should go to the hospital the next day. He came home and went straight to bed. I lounged in the hall and didn’t think of checking up on him since he was resting. When my sis came back his fever has worsen and we made a beeline to the hospital. Our plans to go home to Ipoh for the weekend was shelved for my sister.

In the end, only my dad and myself went home to Ipoh. Then the news got worse. S was diagnosed with possibly having H1N1.  He was treated immediately. I urged my sister to contact Air Asia immediately to keep them informed that all who were on that fight could be at risk. After 3 days, his fever still didn’t go down and the doctors were a little puzzled, so was S’s family as they were doctors themselves. After H1N1 which was already under control, the doctors think he has Influenza A  which he probably caught in the hospital as his immune system was low. After almost a week, he was finally allowed to go home. He is still on “house arrest” of some sort. He will back in the skies in another week.

Though the title sounds like I had the highly infectious flu, my sis and I both had high immune systems that we were both protected from it. Not as exciting as the title suggests but that was my brush with H1N1. The last time I had a brush like this, it was when I was flying, right through SARS, twice! 🙂

All in all a quiet, uneventful trip back home.

Going home to another withdrawal..

I am going home tomorrow!! Till now, 6.30pm, I am flying tomorrow supposedly at 11am, I have yet to receive my tickets from my very irresponsible travel agent. Which is why I like to get my own tickets most of the time. Why am I still using her? Well, it is not me who is using her, but our company. M has dealt with her for more than 10 years now and will continue to use her. He bought the tickets with her before I could even tell him no, and that I will get my own tickets. Also, because of her, M lost his Krisflyer Gold Card qualification because even after several reminders, she kept buying the wrong tickets resulting in no points given. This really riled M up. Because of the nature of our jobs, it is essential that we have the Gold Card. It allows us to go to a Business class check in line which is usually shorter, have extra baggage and the First and Business class lounges available to us whenever we are airport hopping is really a blessing in disguise. The extra baggage also allows us to carry items that are essential for every Italian stand, the espresso machines, and anything else we either forgot or have to bring on our own to supplement the stand, with no extra cost. Anyway, we are working on this. Hopefully we can get him back on track with just one flight.

I am going home to Malaysia. As you all know from my earlier posts, I don’t have any data plan on my local number, oh, man am I going to suffer!!! Sniff!! T_T this is the crying emoticon, right? I so bad at this. 😛 Don’t get me wrong, I LOVE to go home. I get to see my family and eat! eat! eat! A little exercise in between and then eat again! But, as my sister said, I am such an internet whore. I blame all this on my new found interest in Twitter. I love to read the posts and the fact that I am in touch with people around the world in real time. I know that FB does the same but it feels distinctly different. I prefer Twitter. Not much mumbo jumbo to sift through. Just 140words or less. Get the gist and move on.

I have to go soon. A friend came down from Turin and is now in front of me. Update y’all soon!

Toodeloos!!

Update: just got the tickets now. Better late than never, right? 🙂

Island Weekend

Tonight we will be making our way to the island of Sardegna. It is going to a long 12+hour ferry ride and another 130km+ drive before we even get to where we want to go. It is going to be a loooooong weekend. I am super excited though. I have heard so much about the beauty of Sardegna and also how freaking expensive it is in summer. It is after all the playground of the rich and famous in the summer. I think the destination that we are going for is Porto Cervo.

I heard that the people of Sardegna, commonly referred to as Sarda have special plane and ferry ticket prices. As a concession for them as part of Italy and to allow them to have more access to the mainland. Somehow, we managed to get the cabins for our night stay on the ferry as our other friends going along with us is originally from Sardegna. Lucky us!

I am bringing along my camera and hopefully I do some justice to the beauty that surrounds me! 😛

Toodeloos and have an amazing weekend!!!

P/s: My FIL just informed me that we should have bought tickets for Olbia instead of Porte Torres. Olbia is only 40+km from our destination. OMG!!! we are going on motorcycle too!! but hey! It will be fun! It has been some time since our last road trip! Wheeeeeeeeee!!!!!!!

Skin Care – Lancome

Pretty mundane entry. I just wanted to rave about a line of skin care that I have been using for years. I am not paid for this. This is just my own tried and tested love for the products.

I first got introduced to this brand Lancome back in 1998 when I first joined Singapore Airlines. Every other year, SQ has a contract with different make up brands to teach their skin care and make up classes. For my year Lancome was the company. I don’t really have a skin care regime going on even when I was in school. My sis did. She would take care to wash her face properly and put on moisturiser which probably explains why she has such porcelain skin and need minimum care even now. All I did was just wash my face. I did not even bother with moisturiser. Also, I hardly had make up on.

So, my first formal introduction to any kind of skin care and make up was through this classes. Being new to it, I bought most of the items “recommended” and over time left out some and acquired others. I realised that I didn’t need to spend the amount I spent on make up from them. I could get cheaper alternatives elsewhere where eye colours and blushers were concerned but I found out that for make up removing no one tops them. Personal view of course. Now more than 10 years on, I still only use their make up remover and toner, eye make up remover and eye cream. Even through my lean years (in Uni where I supported myself), Lancome was still the only product I splurged on. I realised that you can use ANY type pf make up as long as you have a good base it doesn’t matter. and one of my good bases is Lancome!

Here are the pictures of the items I use. These pictures are taken from the official Lancome website. http://www.lancome.it. Just raving!

You will realise that there is no mention of moisturisers and face cream but that is for another entry of another amazing product!
